Florida Building Code for Glass Railings
The Florida Building Code (FBC) defines construction work of any type in Florida, including new and renovation projects. It provides standards for building safety and user functionality.
This code gives leeway for creativity and building aesthetics, allowing engineers and architects to build masterpieces. In particular, the FBC pays close attention to the design and installation of guard railings used in walkways, balconies, decks, ramps, stairways, and other elevated surfaces.
This article explores the Florida Building Code with a specific interest in glass railing systems. Reading it should expose you to glass guardrail height requirements, glass panel specifications, pool enclosure details, and more.
What is the Florida Building Code
The Florida Building Code regulates building construction in Florida State. Designed and managed by the Florida Building Commission, this document ensures homes, offices, and other public buildings are safe for humans and offer protection during natural disasters like hurricanes.
The 2023 Florida Building Code is the 8th and current edition of the code used for managing construction and renovation work across the state. Effective December 31, 2023, this code is reviewed, adopted, and updated every 3 years.
Essential standard updates, clarifications, and interpretations are made annually to ensure compliance. Like the California Building Standards Code, this construction regulation is also based on the International Building Code (IBC), which serves as the base code for the Florida Building Code.
This code also has special sections highlighting framed and frameless glass railing specifications for glass panels, guardrail height, loading specifications, and much more.
Where are Glass Railings Required
Glass deck railings and other glass guardrails are essential fixtures in public, commercial, and private buildings. These systems provide support and prevent users from falling off of stairways, ramps, balconies, mezzanines, and platforms elevated beyond specific heights.
The Florida Building Code requires all buildings to meet specific glass railing requirements based on the following:
- Elevated horizontal walking platforms like balconies and decks must have glass railing systems or other guardrails if a drop-off is more than 762 mm (30 inches).
- Framed and frameless glass railings must be designed to withstand 200 lbs concentrated and 50 lbs per linear foot loads, ensuring user and building safety.
- Openings not more than 100 mm (4 inches) in diameter are allowed for all glass guard railings.
- To prevent accidents, glass railing projections from walls should not exceed 114 mm (4.5 inches).
- Stairway guardrails should be 38 mm (1.5 inches) from any wall it may be attached to.
Florida Building Code for Glass Railing System Specifications
The Florida Building Code details glass railing system specifications for the design and installation of framed and frameless glass railings. In particular, these glass railing requirements include glazing requirements, guardrail height, pool fencing details, and more.
Glazing Specifications
The glass panel used in a glass railing system is critical for building safety. As such, safety regulations specify the following glazing requirements for glass in guard.
- Glass panels can be of any color or shade, provided there are no cracks, chips, or visible defects.
- Laminated heat-strengthened or fully tempered glass panels conforming with Class A of ANSI Z97.1 or Category II or CPSC 16 CFR Part 1201 are acceptable for use in guardrails.
- Where there is no risk of falling glass, platforms may have guard railings of single fully tempered glazing complying with Class A of ANSI Z97.1 or Category II of CPSC 16 CFR Part 1201.
- The thickness of glazing used for glass deck railings and other guardrails must be at least 6 mm (0.2 inches).
Glass Guardrail Height Specifications
The height of guard railings is essential once elevated platforms exceed 762 mm (30 inches) above the adjacent floor. Some of these height specifications include:
- Staircases and ramps must have glass guardrails that are at least 864 mm (34 inches) in height.
- The maximum height for any stairway glass railing system is 965 mm (38 inches).
- Balconies, mezzanines, decks, and other raised platforms with horizontal walking surfaces must have railings of not less than 1067 mm (42 inches) high above the base floor.
- The height of each guardrail for framed and frameless glass railing must be uniform throughout the structure.
Pool Enclosure
The Florida Building Code ensures Glass railing systems used for pool enclosure have stricter requirements compared to guardrails used in other locations. This stringent safety requirement is critical to prevent unauthorized access by people, especially children who can accidentally drown without proper supervision.
Pool fencing compliance guidelines specify that in-ground and above-ground pools deeper than 610 mm (24 inches) must be fenced based on the following safety requirements.
- Frameless glass railings used as pool fencing must be nothing less than 1524 mm (60 inches) high, enclosing the pool from all angles and allowing no openings or projections for climbing.
- Gates attached to the enclosure must be self-closing and self-latching.
- The distance between the pool and the glass barriers should not be less than 457 mm (18 inches).
- The diameter of openings on the glass fencing should not be wider than a diameter of 100 mm (4 inches).
Permits are required before a homeowner can erect any enclosure around their pool. In addition, local or county law may vary from one location to another.
Maintenance Tips for Frameless Glass Railings
A well-designed and installed glass railing system lights up indoor and outdoor spaces. However, regular maintenance is crucial to keep these guardrails in excellent condition.
The tips below should enhance glass railing safety.
- Perform regular inspections to identify and replace damaged glass panels, fittings, and brackets prevents unfortunate accidents.
- Clean the glass using soft cloths and non-abrasive cleaners. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can degrade metal fittings and glazing.
- Ensure all better components are rust-free. Immediately replace all fixtures that show signs of rust.
- Ensure rubber gaskets, silicone seals, and other liners around the glazing are intact. Damaged liners should be replaced once detected.
- Drainage systems should be cleared where railing systems are installed in outdoor locations. Doing this helps prevent the buildup of water, leading to corrosion.
Conclusion
The Florida Building Code is the benchmark for construction and renovation projects across Florida State. The 8th edition of the code is based on the International Building Code (IBC).
In particular, this document specifies glass railing requirements for glazing and guardrail specifications. It also details pool fencing specifications.
Adherence to the maintenance tips presented above should keep a glass railing system in good condition, significantly extending its lifespan.

from 124 reviewsWe are so pleased with the service of this company! We live 3 provinces away and the ordering and delivery both went smoothly. Everything came in a crate delivered right to our door with free shipping! All intact. Thank you so much. The quality appears great but I guess we will see when the rails are up and in place.🙂
I shopped for quite a long time and search from website to website but they were the only one to have the measurements I needed
I was hesitating between the glass railing store and invisirail but ultimately landed here because of better quality. Beautiful product, will buy again for other projects
I'm so happy I found you guys because I was getting quotes for like $180 per linear foot which is crazy! I was able to install it with my son for half of that because of glass railing store. Thank you so much for all the help in crafting the project, I will be recommending you guys from now on
Beautiful job! Incredibly happy with your prompt delivery and beautifully finished glass, will definitely be using your services again. 5-Stars!
Very satisfied with my order, glass is thick and strong. I love how the corners are a little rounded, I didn't even know that was going to be the case
good quality to price ratio, I recommend
Thank you so much to the team for delivering my glass railing! I am super grateful that I found you guys it just looks great! My husband installed it last night so I have a beautiful sunset picture for you guys to enjoy!
All my neighbours are going to order too, can I have a discount for referring
good
Just beautiful, will be ordering again for my son's house
I was a little skeptical at the beginning as I was worried that they may be cheap, but Marine in customer service assured me that they were good. They arrived last week and WOW they weight like 5 pounds each (of stainless steel!!) and come with adjustable screws (didn't even know)
The quality is amazing and I highly recommend them for hardware, this is really heavy duty stuff. I also like that they have a 10 year warranty on the rust, that we will have to wait 10 years to comment on but pretty good. Once again, thank you marine for assisting me
same review as the other connectors
I personally went with the big connectors as I have stronger winds coming from the lake, but I can see how someone may choose the smaller ones for less hardware.
I think the big ones offer more support
I had some doubts at the beginning as I have no clue how they ship glass, but everything arrives in a crate in great shape!
I mean look at that, definitely one of the most affordable options online too, especially compared with invisarail or like the home depot alternative.
Got the coupons too for an extra discount
Installation was a breeze. These hinges work perfectly.
Just don't forget to follow the instruction thing for the closing speed!
So far so good, installation was pretty straight forward but I have been doing my concrete pouring too. Let's see how this holds up the next 20 years
